the truth of the matter is………
it wears a timeless watch. it bills the banks. walks the planks. tastes the roads. speaks with unnerving honesty. dazzled with a lust to live.
it’s toby connor. a debut. a voice. refusing lo-fidelity stabs at poetry infused rock.
about a year ago, toby connor willingly walked out onto a deserted road in the middle of nowhere with a guitar in his hand and a grand, sweeping voice with poetry inside his pocket. that was soon after he had shared the stage with patti smith at the hop farm festival, while being the front man of ‘the paris riots’. she had stopped to tap him on the shoulder and pronounced the words: “ I’ll see you out there”.
with years of road testing in a paris riot fashion in front of this planet’s hungry eyes and with patti’s tap on the shoulder, it didn’t take much to take the first steps onto that solo road. along its lonely banks, he sharpened his midnight howl at the moon, found the sign reading ‘london’ and a vision of home called “the truth of the matter is”.
a year later – backed by a band of partners in crime – the fourteen walls of that home been built and rolled out onto small venues that are lucky enough to have come across their beat.
with a lyric-first approach, toby’s bruisingly powerful voice, brings forth stories of counterfeit thieves sounding false alarms, drunken love and warriors, magnetic islands and normal men. they don’t drive but they sure as hell can walk the road.
the recording of “the truth of the matter is” was finished on the 21st of december – the day the world was supposed to end. it was the day that was supposed to “iron out your seams, melt all your dreams, burn your steam into the air, saying it’s a sin to be a drunk before you get to paradise”. a few days before that, a normal man was singing: “but what if we get there? What are we going to do if we get there?
today, during the first frozen days of the mayan afterlife, we might indeed not know what to do, now that we are here. but do realise that the young normal man by the name of toby connor holds the answer. stock your shelters with “the truth of the matter is ” or get out there to find out…..
